How a small grain of wheat can create great things for the industry.: The wheat grain.

The Crespel & Deiters Group is one of Europe’s leading specialists for wheat-based products and associated solutions. Based on the raw material wheat, Crespel & Deiters, with its companies C&D and Loryma, have been developing innovative ideas for 160 years that are advancing food and non-food companies all over the world.

Wheat needs sun, soil, water – and plenty of knowledge

Wheat counts among one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth. Having originated about 7000 B.C., it is one of the most important agricultural raw materials. Wheat is an important staple in many countries. Especially bread and baked goods are made from wheat flour that is high in nutrients. Today, they cover about 20% of the world’s calorie consumption. Wheat grain’s valuable ingredients are also very healthy for animals. For an optimal diet, they also need carbohydrates from plants, as an important source of energy, and fibre. In addition, the ingredients of wheat are used for technical applications. Here, the natural raw material provides a valuable contribution to efficient and sustainable production.

As a specialist for the separation of wheat, Crespel & Deiter’s vision is to develop the great variety of possibilities offered by the natural raw material, and to utilise and perfect these for industrial applications in the food and non-food sectors. For this purpose, predominantly German wheat is processed into flour in regional grain mills. At the company’s headquarters in Ibbenbüren, the wheat flour, which is separated by centrifugal force, is suspended to a dough by adding water. High-quality wheat starch, wheat proteins, wheat fibres, and wheat extracts are obtained by means of physical separation, such as evaporation, sieving and extraction. During refinement, these natural ingredients are processed into functional products by means of mixing, extrusion and modification, which can be efficiently used in a great variety of different applications and industries.

Crespel & Deiter’s wheat-based products create added value for industrial customers in the manufacture of their products.

ECP: Extruded Cereal Products B.V. (Joint Venture)

With Extruded Cereal Products B.V., Crespel & Deiters has the specialist for the extrusion of wheat-based raw materials for the food industry on board.

So as to comply with the diverse requirements of the food industry, we have been combining our expertise in the food sector with the expertise of a pioneer and formative innovator of extrusion technology in Extruded Cereal Products B.V. since 2014.

Extrusion refers to process technology in food processing. It contributes to expanding the food supply, for example in terms of shelf life and quality. This technology allows the development of products with new shapes and textures. One particularly promising application of extrusion is the production of fibre-like structures from wheat proteins. The resulting extrusion product is used for the production of vegetarian and vegan foods, for which there is increasing demand.

The various uses of extrusion to manufacture new and innovative food products is very promising for the future of food production.
